On December 8, 2025, a grand academic event that brings together global canal wisdom and focuses on future development was launched in Yangzhou, a historical and cultural city. Representatives from 23 leading universities across 10 countries, including China, France, Egypt, the United Kingdom, and Brazil, gathered together to witness the official establishment of the Canal-city University Cooperation Mechanism (CUCM). The establishment of CUCM aims to bring together the intellectual resources and civilizational heritage of more than 3,000 cities located along over 520 canals across more than 50 countries worldwide, in order to jointly address the common challenges humanity faces in cultural heritage preservation, ecological and environmental governance, and sustainable development.

At this high-level international academic conference themed “Talent Gathering Along the Grand Canal”, the collision of ideas and civilizational dialogue transcended geographical and linguistic boundaries. During the symposium themed “Canal Civilization and the Mission of Universities”, experts and scholars from France’s ECAM LaSalle, Egypt’s Xaverian University of Science and Technology, University of Bradford in the UK, and several Chinese universities engaged in in-depth dialogue. The discussed topics combined the depth of history with contemporary concerns, ranging from ancient canal governance wisdom to modern green technology applications, alongside the evolution from the digital preservation of cultural heritage to the collaborative cultivation of interdisciplinary talent.

Faced with this intense intellectual debates, our interpreter team demonstrated outstanding adaptability and academic translation capabilities.
